Yes! We run into this all the time.
This confused me for a while. The fine folks at Richir Outreach have a fine blog post about this: http://richiroutreach.com/blog/exclusion-queries-and-advanced-listbuilding-nationbuilder
Algie, I’m not an expert at all, but it seems like you would want to look at the CSS and override the border. You can use the !important CSS declaration to override the default styles (like the image border), but I think it’s bad to rely on that (rather than using the cascade and specificity to override defaults). So something like: .myimageclass { border-style: none !important; }
And you would want to add the img tag in the template, but it sounds like you’re doing that. Hope this helps.

Martha, I included my JavaScript by uploading the script to Theme -> Files, instead of pasting it in using New File. Uploading gets around the file type restrictions. Then I linked to the script in the footer. You might want to see: http://nationbuilder.com/demodirect/javascript_resources
I would have never figured that out. Thanks!
