Where to start

When a person provides an email address or mobile phone number on your website, they can choose whether to receive updates from you. Here is what that looks like on a signup form using the Publish theme:

If users do not want to receive updates, they will need to uncheck the boxes next to "Send me email updates" and "Send me text message updates."

Configure opt-ins

You can choose to have opt-in boxes unchecked. This means that when signing up on your website, a person will need to check the box next to these statements to be opted into email blasts and text message blasts. This is a site-wide setting, so the choice will affect every page on your website.

1. Go to Website > [Site name] > Site settings > Basic.

2. Uncheck the box next to "Email & text message opt-in checkbox defaults to checked."

3. Click the Save site button at the bottom of the page.

Now people will have to actively opt-in to receiving email blasts and text message blasts from your nation. If someone does not opt into blast communication, their contact info will still be recorded in their profile. If you are using NationBuilder Mailboxes, you will still be able to send her one-to-one email.

Please be aware that checkboxes are formatted differently in each of our public themes. For example, in the Publish theme default style, an opt-in checkbox that is checked is blue with a white check, whereas it is grey when unchecked. You can see this on the Publish theme demo site join page.
