How can I optimize my email deliverability?

A:

Email deliverability for mass emails is a complicated art, and one that NationBuilder takes very seriously. There are a couple of big things you can do to make sure folks are getting your emails:

One: Use email addresses that match a custom domain. Emails from "Joe Blue for Congress" for your nation joeblueforcongress.com should not come from "joeblueforcongress@gmail.com." Take the time to make sure you're set up with a good custom domain name and custom email addresses before you start using blast email services.

Two: Use NationBuilder's two email profiles wisely. The first is "Supporters" and includes people who've opted in to receiving communications from you. The second is "Prospects" and should be used for first-time mailings to voters and personal contacts who are hearing about your nation for the first time. These two email profiles should never be used interchangeably.

Email services interpret the practices of sending from one domain address as the reply when the IP is attached to a different domain as spoofing, one of the most egregious spam tactics. It is very inadvisable. If clientX wants to send a supportive email though clientY’s nation, the best practice is to set up a new email address for clientX@clientY.com.

Sounds good. In the event that foo.com nation wants to send from me@bar.com, are these DNS modifications a service that NationBuilder offers upon request to NationBuilder account holders?

To the best of my knowledge, other email broadcast services do not have this requirement that the domain associated with the account be the domain the email message goes out from. What is it that is unique about the custom domain?

Jerimee, if you have control of the DNS and can add records as listed here, http://nationbuilder.com/email_dns_records, you can optimize deliverability for that scenario. Different email providers (Hotmail, Yahoo, Comcast, Gmail, etc) all have different rules on how they handle incoming email, and those change regularly – what we can say is the best possible scenario is the custom domain with emails coming from that same custom domain.

Can a nation with main domain foo.com be configured to broadcast emails from a broadcaster with email address me@bar.com without sacrificing deliverability?

Assuming that foo.com and bar.com are both domains we own and control.
