API for pushing data to NationBuilder

This has been much in demand and discussed in the FAQ, and we've heard various promises about its implementation.

An API to push external signups to would be essential to us. Given how keen NationBuilder has been to have everything filed as an official feature request, here you go! :-)

Ladies and Gentlemen, please vote...

A block-style calendar for events

I believe it would be very useful to have a block-style calendar for displaying events. Something like this would be ideal and easy to stylize:

(If you agree that this feature would be useful, Post your comment below)

Official response from Adriel Hampton

Content such as block style calendars (an Apple or Google calendar is a much different type of calendar than the event RSVP calendars we use at NationBuilder) is simple to embed from your page template. Here are Google's instructions for getting a calendar embed code. And here's a look at how to use NationBuilder pages

We also appreciate your comments on wanting our calendars to have a block display format, and will consider them in our development priorities.

Contact your legislator

We'd love  a feature where someone can plug in their zip code and send a form or custom letter to their local legislators.

Contact Scripts

One great tool NationBuilder lacks (and could easily add) is a customizable (for each list) script for the Call Mode contact tool.

Importing new private notes

For organizations trying to transfer their databases over to NationBuilder from other platforms this would be a very useful tool. Many databases have extra note fields that organizations populate with important info. When it comes time to move to NationBuilder there is nowhere to put this info other than the background note field, which is usually the first to go. For additional notes you are out of luck.

Being able to import note columns as a new private note would eliminate this issue, and since private notes are unlimited in NB you could import as many different note fields as you'd like.

new recurring donation function on same page as donation page

deally we would like the option where it is a button on the first donate page -- like this one -- you see you can just click the button then do monthly/quarterly/yearly:

A/B testing for email

Email is still the killer app for advocacy, election campaigns, and fundraising. NB needs to incorporate a way for groups who have enough people in their nation to give them statistically significant results to test different variables in their emails. NB needs to implement A/B testing for subject lines at the very least. It's becoming more and more frustrating to use NB at a high level and to leave something on the table because I'm just going with my gut, rather than being able to test various options.

The experience of the Obama campaign certainly shows that often the gut picks of seasoned campaigners performed worse than other options. I'd like to avoid that trap and maximize the impact of the people in my nation.

Official response from Adriel Hampton

It's not yet a full solution, but a few months back we introduced random list splitting, which you can use to create groups of people for testing. Find it under "Split" after selecting a specific list.

Content Import Tool

(couldn't find a similar suggestion, so here goes...)
on the cms side, our clients would benefit greatly from a content import tool. the legacy import is nice, but really doesn't result in pages that are of much use. there was some testing of a wordpress blog > nationbuilder blog tool last year, so we're hoping something is still in the works.

clients that come to us w/ scores of pages (or more) are always surprised to learnt that the migration from another cms to NB will be mostly manual. even a simple tool that just pulled titles and content and target content type from a cvs file would be a massive time saver.

Email broadcaster should be sticky

If I click on the email button for a user, to send them a personal email, there's a drop-down box to choose which broadcaster is going to send the email to them.  This dropdown selection currently defaults to whichever broadcaster is first alphabetically.  It should default to whichever broadcaster you used to send the last email you sent.  Most often, users will want to send a number of emails in a row using the same broadcaster and this would save them a lot of clicks.

Advanced Search - provide a list of tags to exclude

For some of us, we have a large list of people in our voter database (150,000+). To add all of them to the shopping cart and then to remove certain tags from them is time-consuming (on our end) and resource-consuming (on your end). It takes forever if it works at all frankly.

Better would be an additional search field under Tags where we can list tags to exclude from the search.

Customizable fields

I would be helpful to have a few fields that nation-admins could customize. There are some specific actions/roles I'd like users to be able to opt-in to (like yard signs, hosting a coffee, offering to publicly support a campaign) on a single form.

Right now, I don't see how I could do that without embedding a Google form and then periodically importing records with the fields as tags. I lose a lot of other functionality though if I have to do that.

Official response from Adriel Hampton

Custom fields are live as part of our Enterprise edition. Here's how they work. If you need to turn them on, contact your organizer or just drop us an email.

Resource Tree for Website Layout

Navigating between pages time consuming and we don't really have a single-shot view of the nation's layout. This can get confusing on larger sites where the user may not always remember where subpages are located. Having a resource tree on the left side of the page for the site layout would speed editing greatly and make editing the site structure a less daunting task.

Tagging 'likes' of Facebook posts

When people are commenting on Facebook posts, I can have them tagged automatically as defined in the Broadcaster settings. But if they just 'like' a post, there's no way of auto-tagging them, which would be really useful in order to easily show which broadcaster they've connected to.

There also doesn't seem to be a way to advanced-search for people who 'liked' a certain broadcaster's post on Facebook.

Also, as mentioned earlier, it would make sense if people who like Facebook posts would be recognised at least as prospects, not as 'non-supporters'.

Hmm, three feature requests in one here... :-)

Configurable forms

A feature that's surprisingly missing is the ability to specify specific/custom fields of information for forms like the Volunteer form, and the ability to configure which fields are required and the labels/text associated with each field.

Official response from Adriel Hampton

Custom fields are now live as part of our Enterprise edition. Here's how they work.

Recurring Donations

Having the ability to sign up donors for automatic monthly, quarterly, seme-anual, and anual contributions is critical for organizations that depend on donations to operate and succeed.

Official response from NationBuilder Support considering

Recurring membership can be accepted using the paid membership page.  It requires a Paypal Business account and membership levels must be pre-defined by a nation.

Allowing a donor to specify an amount to donate on a regular basis is not currently a feature.

visitors can choose multiple tags/checkboxes on signup form

The request is to add an additional options to the signup form that lets the person tag themselves with checkboxes.

If you only want them to be able to specify one classification/tag, you can already do this with the Signup page type. This request is to add multiple.

Press release archive

It would be good to be able to display a list of press releases, like a blog entry list. Without this, I'm not sure what the point is of having a press release page type...?
