Suggest a feature for NationBuilder

We are constantly adding, refining and even removing features. This is the best place to make your voice heard on what you'd like to see.

Call Center/List

It would be great to allow volunteers to login and make phone calls from lists, with multiple people calling off the same list at the same time. Developing this internally would certainly be non trivail.

Callfire.com is a system that has already been done correctly, and they have an API. Here is a link to their API info, http://www.callfire.com/dialer/cm/custom_telephony.html

Photo Gallery

I'm not sure why there aren't page templates for a photo gallery or at least to include a feed from Flickr or the like. Can you please add it?

Official response from Lilia Villa

Take a look at one of our latests blogs for embeddig Flikr/Picasa:

reusable email blasts

It would be nice to be able to tap an already created email blast to reuse or modify.  If I need to send it to a few more people, I don't have to recreate it.  Or if I can use as a starting place to create a new one.

I realize the metrics are built into the blast function, so perhaps you could be able to resave it as new?

save import mapping

On import you must map the fields in your file to the fields in the database.

One should be able to save field mapping to facilitate future imports with identical column headers (field set).

Permission Levels

We are working with several campaigns, and permission levels are  becoming an issue.

I would like the ability to have granular permission control over features and fields, as well as the ability to create more user types, so that we can allow/restrict access where needed.

Right now, even interns have the ability to import and export data, which will greatly limit the number of people that the candidates allow to access to the system.

Official response from Jim Gilliam considering

We will be restricting access to staffers and above for importing/exporting data, that is a very good idea.

If you can flesh out in more detail what features you do not want different levels to be able to do, I will definitely look at those.

We don't intend to have additional user types or let you choose which features are permissible for additional user types because we've found that to get really confusing for people very quickly.

NB Installation Profiles (flavors, patterns)

NationBuilder, out of the box, is sort of political campaign "flavored" - default text is written (where not perfectly neutral) to assume an election campaign type website.

You can customize your theme to make your nation have language and a feel appropriate to a direct service organization, or an advocacy organization, or a music group, or high school reunion network - but you have to do some customization work to get there.

I suggest NationBuilder consider adding an option allowing users, on the creation of a new nation, to choose a "flavor" of NationBuilder most appropriate to them. When one creates a new Nation there could be an option to choose "Election," "NonProfit," "ForProfit." Based on what intent is chosen default text is set as most appropriate to that option.

So, like, if you choose Election, poltical capital is called "political capital", but if you choose NonProfit it is called "karma", and if you choose ForProfit it is called "reward points" or similar.

As an interim step, I believe popular themes could be cloned to incorporate these language changes. So Basic - Election could look exactly the same as Basic - ForProfit, only the language would change between those two themes.

create clone of page

It would be useful to be able to make a copy of a page.

Tag Documentation

No matter how descriptively I name my tags, six months later I'm likely to forget all the details and context important to good supporter management. Future targetting and segmentation decisions may require more info than just the tage name.

I suggest adding a text area description field to the tag object to allow for a long form explanation of when, why, and how a tag was applied. The tag list view would then read: Name, Taggings, Description (or Notes).

theming cheat sheet

It would be great to have a cheat sheet that looks and works like this one

Dedupe

Thanks for updating the deduping options. When going through the list, here are the options:

Yes, this is the same person
No, this is not the same person
None of these are the same person

We need a "Next" and "Back" option to pass on the page, so that we can make the decision later.
I would like it if you

"Add to calendar" feature in events

The event system works great - would be good if there could be a function to (optionally) add to events to export to Outlook/Google Calendar/etc.

multilingual nations

Any plans to adds tools that would allow Nations to be multiple language?

To have a nation display in both english and spanish we'd need not just a content mgmt tool for i18n, but also a way to create and organize templates into spanish and english, and a button to allow users to switch back and forth.

Lists by User

On the individual user page (i.e. nationbuilder.com/admin/signups/####) provide an interface to see the lists that user has been assigned to, and, where appropriate, the check box to remove the user from one or more of those lists.

Table function for Content Editor.

It'd be great if you could add table function in the content editor.

I'm sure people find chances to use tables for data comparison. Thanks

Recurring memberships

It would be great to have automated emails for expiring membership terms - so if someone signs up in January, they get an email in December reminding them to renew and than another reminder right before renewal. The ability to customize this kind of email alert would be very helpful for membership organizations.

Recurring Donations

Having the ability to sign up donors for automatic monthly, quarterly, seme-anual, and anual contributions is critical for organizations that depend on donations to operate and succeed.

Official response from NationBuilder Support completed

You can now do this with the paid membership page.  It requires a Paypal Business account.

Negative Search Option with Tags

I would like to be able to do a negative search on a list, so that a search will show everything that does NOT have a specific tag or tags.

The example is that I may go through a list and tag a bunch of records, and now want to see the records that did not get tagged.

Advanced Search - Households for canvassing

One extremely important feature for canvassing is to be able to include all the people in a given household in a walk or call list. For example, if you're going door-to-door you want everyone in the household listed in case they are the ones answering the door. By household I mean everyone at the same exact address (including apt # so don't use lat/lng).

Ideally there are two areas where householding should be used. When printing a walk list (or call list) an option to "include others in household" should be added. If selected, all others in household should be added but ideally there should be some indicator that they are "secondary" to the primary targets. Boldface perhaps.

The second place would be during searches. There could be a button that takes an existing search result and "households it" adding all others in the same addresses. There could be another checkbox during the search - maybe next to the green search button - to make that happen at search time.

I consider both of these crucial for real door-to-door realities.

Thanks...

Repeatable volunteer sign-up forms

We need to be encouraging volunteers to sign up at different points and with different focuses (so we'll be using multiple volunteer sign-up pages) - but we still need a core list of volunteer options.  It would be a great time-saver if we could populate one central list of volunteer options and then choose to include that for each new volunteer page.

At the moment, doing it from scratch each time is a genuine pain point...;-)

Official response from Jim Gilliam not planned

I initially had it as one set list of volunteer roles across all volunteer signup pages, but that wasn't how people ended up using them because they would use it for specific things like "Host a house party on July 13th" instead of "Host a house party".

With survey pages, I had the survey questions shared across all the survey pages and then you specified which ones to use on any given survey (so they could be shared), but people found that very confusing, so I ended up making the survey questions only apply to a given survey page.

So I didn't want to recreate that confusion when fixing the volunteer signup pages.  You can attach a tag to each role, so if you end up having three volunteer signup forms and you want "phone banking" on each one of them, you do have to create that role three times, but you can give all three of those the tag "phone banking" and be sure to keep your database clean.

Advanced Search - provide a list of tags to exclude

For some of us, we have a large list of people in our voter database (150,000+). To add all of them to the shopping cart and then to remove certain tags from them is time-consuming (on our end) and resource-consuming (on your end). It takes forever if it works at all frankly.

Better would be an additional search field under Tags where we can list tags to exclude from the search.
