Suggest a feature for NationBuilder

We are constantly adding, refining and even removing features. This is the best place to make your voice heard on what you'd like to see. You can also suggest new support documentation you'd like to see.

Didn't find what you're looking for in the search box above? Add a suggestion.

"Do not mail" button to keep address data but prevent mail outs

Ideally there would be a button/option/etc. that would allow us to prevent mailing clients who do not wish to receive paper mail without having to scrub their address to do it.

"Like page" text should be editable in the backend

There should be a field in the backend where you can change what it says above the like page ("like this page") so you can cater the call specifically to the page content. We often do this for clients in our practice but it's tedious and it would be nice if clients could write a blog post and then custom write that call to the content of the post, for example.

Thanks NB! You rule!

event/donate hybrid page-type

What we've seen from running larger scale fundraising operations on NationBuilder is that donors are often confused/lost in the process of going from a ticketed event page to the contribution page for check-out. From a UX standpoint, it's pretty clear that when you lengthen the process for someone trying to purchase a ticket to an event to two pages, you are likely to lose some folks along the way.

An event/donate hybrid page-type would solve this problem. Letting people RSVP and actually purchase their tickets on the same page would definitely improve drop-off rates for online ticket sales.

Official response from Adriel Hampton not planned

Every major ticketing system has an event details page where you select how many tickets you want, and then you land on the payment page. It's the most desirable interface for this functionality.

website reporting view

NationBuilder's contact view is great for viewing logged contacts in the database. What's missing in the control panel is a comprehensive analytical dashboard for your website and social media accounts so you can see everything from online signups, specific page actions taken, RTs, and FB likes all on one board.

Right now, cobbling together an analytical report for a Nation requires multiple search queries in advanced search, you can't even search for new signups "today" (as far as I know), and it's usually unclear who came from where. People, including me, often forget to check "joined from page" in these kinds of searches. You really have to be an advanced user to pull these metrics together and that shouldn't be the case. Seeing basic stats on how your website action pages are doing and filtering those by time-span should be as easy as viewing your logged contact history.

"lock top nav" feature

Right now, when you go to create a new page "include in top nav" is checked as a default. This is cumbersome for bigger campaigns who have staff drafting and publishing blog posts but have a nice Veracity Media designed theme where the top nav is essentially "set". If one of these staff forgets to uncheck "include in the top nav" this creates a problem. I would definitely suggest unchecking it as a default.

Additionally, I would suggest adding a site-wide feature called "lock top nav" which let's administrators keep others control panel users from publishing new pages to the top nav.

Impact and Activity time charts

It would be amazing to produce a chart that reflects contacts made per unit of time. We can only see contacts made "today" and "yesterday", but then we cannot isolate what we made three days ago. It jumps to "seven days" "month" and so on.

Apparently there is an option to see contacts made per month, yet this was not very useful for us in an incredibly rushed one month national presidential campaign.

Meaningful donation error messages

AFAIK, NB only has one flash error message on donation failure, and it doesn't provide any information as to why the donation failed.

We see these a lot. We're not sure if it's user error, or if there's something wrong with our nation.

Just now we had a problem with an API key. ActiveMerchant (which I assume you're using) gives back some more helpful error messages. It would be really helpful to get those some place.

Nationbuilder's lack of email nurture sequence is a deal breaker

Hi guys. I like NationBuilder but due to the excessively basic email features, have had to stick with MailChimp as I refuse to pay extra for an email service which isn't going to let me schedule campaigns, create a triggered follow-up sequence automatically or track open or click rates. This is awkward and messy, and I'm not able to use either NB or Mailchimp as effectively as I'd like. Nurture sequences are super important for businesses, especially information marketers, and I'd like to see you making improvements to this. I don't want to have to log in and follow up manually with everyone when a simple automated email would be the logical first step.

Far from being the easy-integrated-solution, NB is actually proving messier and more time consuming than the wordpress blog I migrated from, particularly as I can't schedule blog posts within NB and miss the widgets.

Official response from Jim Gilliam

What you are describing is a whole class of software known as "marketing automation" - HubSpot will do these drip or "nurture" campaigns that you are describing. It is, however, substantially more expensive than NationBuilder or MailChimp.

As to your other points, expect to see email blast scheduling shortly, and you've always been able to track open and click rates.

Aggregate Goals from sub-pages

It would be nice if a donation page with a goal would (or, better yet, had a check box so it could) aggregate the activity on subpages into its total.  Allows for a general campaign with sub-groups / sub-goals.

Thanks

Fix the "Create New List" button in Advanced Search

Hey there... the ability to add search results to a newly created list seems to have broken with the rollout of the new backend design. When I do an advanced search, then click the Add to List button, then select "Create New List", it takes me to a new list creation page, but then when it finishes creating the new list, it doesn't add all the search results. So I have to go back to the advanced search tool and conduct the search again, then add it to the list i just created.

Ability to find People based on social media conversations

As an example, say I want to find all people in my lists that are into open government. While nothing in their basic data states their interest, if you look at their social media posts you can see who might be.

Twitter blast

It would be great if I could DM all my followers.

Official response from Jim Gilliam not planned

Unfortunately, Twitter shuts down accounts that do this. For that reason, we will not support it, and highly recommend you don't use any other tool that claims to do it.

Batch update language

That needs to be addressed. We now have to do it manually and it's very time consuming

Extensibility/Customizability/Integration

We are growing a team of pretty capable web developers, and rather than have them entertain ideas that are completely off-board of NB, it makes much more sense to enable them to extend, customize and/or integrate with NB.  A search of the support forums came up with zero hits on these keywords.  We anticipate needs where we will want to be able to control page flow and layout options that appear to be beyond what is normally possible with NB right now, as well as read and write to the NB database.
Some technical information about what possibilities there are using Javascript would be very useful, like to control page flow.   A web service or REST resource would seem to be the best way to provide integration.  By providing such capabilities for developers, you will offload having to build every such feature/function in the NB product, per se - and could even leverage and incorporate what community developers create - basically adding crowdsourcing your development.

Sign-In Page for Events

We would like to have a page for attendees at our events to conveniently sign-in with.
The only thing related we can find on NB is to join, (or the admin page  for entering new contacts: https://XXX.nationbuilder.com/admin/signups/new  which is way too much for a usable sign in page).
All we really want is name, email, and city or zip code - and to tag the user.
The Use Case is: The attendee would start by entering their last name or email address. We would do a type ahead search, present a short list of matched names (esp. RSVP'd) -  so just a few letters ought to be sufficient to find them if they are in the database.  If not, they go on to enter first name, last name, and city or zip.
While our primary method would probably be to have laptops or tablets at the event sign-in table. a mobile webpage would complement that as a high-volume parallel method - there is no bottleneck to have people sign-in on their own phone by going to a link, but maybe not real convenient for some.
BENEFITS OF DIGITAL SIGN IN
There are multiple benefits of digital sign-in. We
  • capture new people without staff data entry
  • the record (tag) of meeting attendance, which let's us understand how involved people are,
  • able to send them meeting-specific follow-ups,
  • campaign leads could coordinate with active team members
  • also, opportunities that it will open up in the future.

Official response from Adriel Hampton

Rand, event signups are supported through the events page. Just set up a simple event, and folks can sign up for it on the spot with name and email - you can also specify a tag for them during setup, or you can batch add a tag from the RSVP list later.

When folks sign in, they will be partially logged in - you can clear session between sign-ins by going to "yoursite.com/logout" You can also use a membership page to sign up new paid members at an event or meeting.

Specific VOLUNTEER PAGE FLOW from RSVP

VOLUNTEER PAGE FLOW
The issue is that for Event RSVP and Join pages, if the user checks the Volunteer checkbox, they can only go to ONE default volunteer page for the entire site.  We need event RSVP's when, Volunteer is checked,  to flow to event-specific Volunteer pages.  I had previously gone through a loop with the Support team on this, so I think the Support answer is clear - can't do it.
its an urgent need.  It is impacting our campaigns and I need to know if there is (or is going to be) a near-term NB fix for the problem, or we have to figure out something else to work around this limitation.

Post events to Facebook as page, not individual

Could you make it possible to post events to Facebook as page, rather than as a person? Facebook seems to allow for it: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/api/page/#events

Official response from Adriel Hampton

You can create an event on a Facebook page and easily connect it to your NationBuilder event by adding the URL in your events control panel under Event Settings > Social.

Want to display survey results to my survey takers

There are many informal surveys taken on the Internet, where respondents are presented with the cumulative to-date results of the survey they've just taken.  I'd like to do the same thing with my NB survey: immediately present the cumulative results to each person who takes the survey as soon as he/she is done.

Make it so several websites can share a single blog

it would be cool if you could have two or more websites in the same NB account share a single blog.
