David, while you cannot make that change on the theme level you can definitely type ’Dear ’ in front of the smart field for first name or friend and have it appear in your email blasts.

Hi Meg! I tried and I saw the same issue that you had - so I checked around and I think that I just wasn’t hitting the edit button aggressively and exactly enough. If you make sure you are exactly in the middle of the edit button you should get the edit page (I added screenshots above).
