How do I make "Don't publish my profile on the website" the default?

When a user creates a new account, their profile is automatically published to the site. The user has to manually go into their settings and check off "Don't publish my profile on the website" to unpublish their profile. 

I would rather the profile not be published to the public by default. Is there a setting for this?

Under Website > [Name of Site] > Site Settings > Basic, you can disable public profiles sitewide by unchecking the "Show public profiles" checkbox as shown below:

As of June 20, 2013, public profiles is unchecked by default on newly created nation sites.

    The reason why the individual record will still have the box checked is that, in some cases, customers have multiple sites and choose to show public profiles on some (but not others).

    In those cases, the site-wide setting takes precedence, but on the sites where public profiles are active it’s possible to deactivate them on an individual basis.

    Digvijay — That’s how it’s supposed to work. If you’ve unchecked “Show Public Profiles” within your Site Settings, the individual person’s record will still have the box checked off. If, however, you attempt to view their actual public profile on that site, you’ll see that it is not published.

    Its not working as you have stated above - thats the bug/issue ;). I have it unchecked — but if you look in the profile of the imported person the setting there shows up as checked.
