Email accounts configured to defeat systems that try to get “read status”

We find that the stats displayed for our email blasts are grossly incorrect due to recipients configuring the privacy settings in their accounts to block sending out a "read status." We also cannot be sure they even recieved it (some people I have contacted from the "Unopend" list have indicated they never received it). This appears to happen with about 40% of recipients. I fear some are going to Spam folders but there is no way to tell.  Also, all .aol emails bounce which from what I read there appears to be no way around this. How can we ensure everyone gets the blast and that the stats are accurate?  We are now manually sending them out to those "unopened" people to be sure they receive it. Thanks.

Great questions, Kari. One thing you can do is ask your supporters to mark your emails as "important" and "not spam" - that will help. Email blasting is much different than sending one-to-one emails and an open rate of more than 30% is generally considered very good. We have a bunch of advice and guidelines in our Communication FAQs - www.nationbuilder.com/communication - and will look to discuss this more in today's NationBuilder Live.
