Position Summary

Vote Run Lead is an expansion-stage nonprofit looking to significantly scale to meet heightened market demand for women’s political leadership training and implement a moon-shot goal of gender parity in all 50 state legislatures (the State Parity Project), launching in 2021 in Georgia (GA), Minnesota (MN) and New York (NY). Vote Run Lead is seeking to hire a State Director for each of the three states to start January 2021. The State Directors will provide skilled leadership for all aspects of Vote Run Lead’s programming and training partnerships in their respective states, and will prioritize implementing the Vote Run Lead Training Institute and the Vote Run Lead State Parity Project.

 

The State Directors report directly to the Chief Program Officer (CPO), serve as key members of Vote Run Lead’s State Parity Project team, and collaborate closely with other organizational leaders, including the operations, development, and media teams.

 

The State Parity Project will house market-tested and delivered innovative, data-driven methodologies, tools, and technology to ensure all 50 states achieve and maintain gender parity in state legislatures. The project will be a testing lab for marketing, recruitment, community-building, and other activities to grow the representation of women in state legislatures. The State Parity Project will work in concert with the Training Institute to achieve project goals.

 

The Training Institute will house and deliver all Vote Run Lead trainings in any location, whether Vote Run Lead-managed, fee-for-service, in partnership, or as special projects, and includes both online and in-person trainings and content. All curriculum design originates in the Training Institute, as well as any training-related recorded or written content. The Training Institute trains, tracks, and manages relationships with all Vote Run Lead Certified National Trainers, a network of national and local partner organizations,  and all #VRLNation (alumnae).

 

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the State Directors include, but are not limited to:

 

Strategy--In coordination with the Chief Program Officer, drive the strategic planning process and determine the state’s priorities, programs and resources; Write and implement the organizational plan and budget for the State Parity Project in the respective state; Manage all in-state Vote Run Lead programming connected to the Training Institute and the State Parity Project;

 

Partnerships--Reach out, develop, and deepen relationships in communities across the state to build a strong pool of female candidates, campaign workers, and thought leaders; Manage existing and establish new partnerships with strategically identified state organizations and networks;

 

Trainings--Identify, train and facilitate trainings and development of trainers and candidates according to the State Parity Project goals, national and state partnership agreements, fee-for-service agreements, and other special projects; Ensure “best in class” quality and consistent delivery across all training programs;

 

Human Resources--Manage and supervise Vote Run Lead in-state staff, interns and volunteers;

 

Fundraising--Actively work with the Chief Program Officer to drive fundraising and resource growth that are required to support the organization’s financial systems and strategic expansion; Develop and manage the state’s program budget to meet funder and partner deliverables and to meet internal goals of the Training Institute and the State Parity Project;

 

Data Collection--Ensure that all metrics related to the State Parity Project are properly tracked and collected; Design quarterly Objectives and Key Results (OKR) for the state’s programming, and evaluate and assess achievements and shortfalls; Collaborate with the Chief Program Officer to establish data collection protocols, ensure data collection consistency, and meet data integrity standards across all in-state programs, working primarily in Vote Run Lead’s NationBuilder database and leveraging the NationBuilder functionality and toolsets.

 

Communications--In collaboration with the Vote Run Lead Communications team, represent Vote Run Lead on the state stage and in the media;

 

Values-- And most importantly, employ anti-racism approach to all programs; support continued development of Vote Run Lead’s racial and cultural equity competencies, and contribute to fostering an inclusive environment for all who work in, with, and alongside Vote Run Lead.

 

Compensation

This is a full-time, leadership position at Vote Run Lead, with a salary commensurate with experience. (Salary range is $65,000-$80,000.) In addition, Vote Run Lead offers an excellent benefit plan, including health insurance through BlueCross-BlueShield, flexible scheduling, and paid travel expenses. For the right candidate, Vote Run Lead is open to flex-time work arrangements, including remote days, customized working hours, and condensed work weeks.

 

Key Qualifications

Vote Run Lead is seeking State Directors who have extensive experience working in politics at both strategic and tactical levels, and along the continuum from grassroots to the statewide scales. The ability to work toward a big-picture vision while working collaboratively and effectively across all levels of the organization is critical. Vote Run Lead is interested in hardworking and mission-focused leaders with experience working in fast-paced environments and proven track records of delivering measurable, impactful results. Women of color and bi-lingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

 

Specific requirements include:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a senior management and/or executive team leadership role;
  • History working in the state and demonstrate an expertise in state and local politics;
  • Direct experience working with communities of color and women to increase civic engagement and political representation;
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate across multiple groups and respond to real-time priority shifts;
  • Demonstrable passion to drive change, pursue game-changing goals, and create meaningful impact around women’s political leadership;
  • Proven commitment to work collaboratively and simultaneously with a variety of constituent groups, including program participants, staff, board members, volunteers, donors, alumnae, and other supporters and partner organizations;
  • Demonstrable and quantifiable track record of past success in similar role or roles;
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills;
  • Expertise or experience in scaling programs to date.
