How can I do an import without a unique identifier?

All of my fields are mapping but I still see an error message indicating that I need an id. I don't have any unique identifiers for these contacts - can I still import them?

Official response from

We do not recommend importing files that do not include unique identifiers, as this will make the process of updating your contacts later on very challenging.

However, it is possible to import data without a unique identifier.

To do this, add a blank column to your CSV spreadsheet prior to uploading it for import. As you are mapping your fields, map the blank column to "id.” During the import process, a NationBuilder ID will be generated for each of the contacts in your import. Please note that you cannot assign a particular number as a person’s NationBuilder ID - it must be generated within your nation.

Again, we do not recommend this process when avoidable. Using this method to import people can result in a lot of duplicate profiles which can make it difficult to keep track of people.

If NationBuilder IDs are the only unique identifiers for your contacts, every data update will require an export of all existing profiles to obtain their NationBuilder IDs. These ID numbers will then need to be matched to your spreadsheet of updated information prior to importing your new data. Otherwise, duplicate profiles will be created.

Additional information on importing data is available.
