Using the import function [http://nationbuilder.com/siteimporter] , is there any risk to our existing website... ie, can we "play" for as long as we want until we get it looking right without damaging our existing site in any way?

At no point will NationBuilder's site importer alter your current website so no need to fret over risk of modifying the existing website with the importer. :)
