Nick, featured content sliders are meant to be implemented without replacing the code using these instructions: "How do featured content sliders work?". If you want to edit how they work and where they appear, that is not a supported feature but you can contact one of our NationBuilder Architects or follow one of these methods to implement a slideshow:
For an image gallery, you can use the approach documented here in conjunction with a light box. Here is documentation for how to install the FancyBox light box. Hooking up the light box to the gallery snippet is as easy as adding a class to the href as you can see in theFancyBox docs. To add images to the gallery, you would simply upload images to the Files area of the gallery page (no resizing needed).
You can read more about the slider plugin we use here: http://slidesjs.com/ - there is documentation available there and customization requires knowledge of javascript. You can follow the same logic used in the example on this FAQ explaining how to slow down the speed of the slides.
