How can I sign people up for volunteer roles manually?

I had an event where people turned in hard-copy sign up cards for volunteer roles.  Some of them already have profiles in my nation.  How do I "volunteer" them for the roles they requested as an administrator?

There are two things that happen when a person signs up for a volunteer role via your website. First, they are marked as a volunteer. Then, the tag associated with the volunteer role is added to their profile. To replicate this process manually, I would first edit the person's profile and check the box next to Volunteer, then click the "save person" button.

Next, I would add the tag associated with the volunteer role to the person's profile.

Whether you're looking at a person's profile from the People section or editing a specific profile, you'll see an icon next to the tag listings that allows you to add or edit the tags associated with the person's profile. Click on that button and add the tag for the appropriate volunteer role.

You could also create a CSV file in Excel or Google spreadsheets and include at least three columns, like this:

email is_volunteer tag_list
[email protected] Y role1, role2, role3

Since email is a unique identifier, as long as you include the same email address that is already on a person's profile this import will update the existing records in your people database.

The equivalent of checking the box next to the word "volunteer" in a person's profile is having an "is_volunteer" column with Y - just Y - to indicate they are a volunteer.

If a person signs up for more than one volunteer role, you can input multiple people tags by separating them with a comma (and a single tag can have spaces in it). Importing responses as a list would be a useful option if you have a significant number of people to update. We have additional documentation on how to import that can help you if you choose this option.
