Hi, when a new user comes to my nation to signup, if they enter their email address in the box on the sidebar and then click the Signup button next to it, instead of being taken to a page to complete their signup with other required details, the page simply refreshes and throws up two lines in red under the signup email box and button.
The two lines in red are:
"Address is required"
"Phone number is required"
I set those as mandatory inputs for the "join" page, using the "signup settings" panel. I would have thought that the sidebar mini signup form would simply redirect to the main join page, if other signup inputs are required, as in my case.
Please advise if this can be resolved WITHOUT my having to remove the mandatory settings for those 2 fields on the join page. I would have uploaded a screenshot but there's no upload/attach option here.
Thanks.
The signup widget, which is included in Stock Themes either in the header or the sidebar works with the default join page. Like many default aspects of NationBuilder, it is designed to streamline a person's interaction with your nation. Entering an email address in that box will register someone for the site without needing to enter any additional information. The goal is to have a way to communicate with supporters and give them a reason to provide additional information.
To use this widget effectively, your default join page cannot require address and phone number. The signup widget does not direct people to any other form - it completes the signup process.
Please note that requiring email address, address, and phone number can significantly reduce the number of people registering for your nation and may compel people to give you bad information. If you would prefer to require all fields, it is possible to remove the signup widget and replace it with a button that hyperlinks to your signup page. This will require using a custom theme and writing CSS or SASS and is the type of customization that we recommend using a NationBuilder Architect to accomplish. Here is our Architects Directory.

The choice of requiring that information is available for all signup pages on a NationBuilder website. Like the answer above mentioned “To use this widget effectively, your default join page cannot require address and phone number. The signup widget does not direct people to any other form – it completes the signup process.”
If you want a form that requires those fields, then don’t use the Signup widget and just redirect to a signup page with the fields that you’re looking to collect.
You’re right that there are different ways to understand “joining,” and the goal of the signup widget is to engage people as quickly as possible with your nation.
