    “Moving to a softer target”: this is what I think of as “the bicycle lock principle”: any bicycle lock can be broken by someone, working long enough, with the proper tools. But a decent bicycle lock is good enough for most bikes: just make the thief move on to the next one. And that’s what NB should aim to do: make life harder for the large, active body of opportunistic thieves that has plagued us, by giving us a useful, well-understood way to shake them off.

    Agreed, Tyler. And even if this is 100% human-generated spam then adding an optional captcha would complicate the form submission process enough that making thousands of submissions would not be practical. If we’re talking credit card fraud (humans checking stolen credit card details on NB donation forms) as my clients have experienced, the fraudsters would likely just move on to some other site that’s a softer target.

    I think the assessment that it’s “real people” making these phony requests to sites is an inaccurate one. It may in fact be “real people” doing it but it’s more likely than not if they’re doing hundreds or thousands of actions that they’re using some automation which would at least be partially stopped by a captcha.

    It’s ludicrous we don’t have the ability to use a captcha. Just use recaptcha and give us a toggle switch.

    Agree with Lilia Villa – we are getting a large number of spam signups opting in to e-mail resulting in increased costs due to increased number of emailable subscribers. CAPTCHA is not a new technology and is implemented on most websites. We need this feature ASAP.

    So we keep getting spam signups that opt-in to email and a) there’s no way to weed them out less of sitting on the people tab adding them one by one 2) they’re counting towards our emailable # so we’re also effectively paying for them. We are also getting spam event postings. If you just enabled CAPTCHA we could be done with this 5 year old conversation about a big problem.

    Collin – I’ve updated our official response above. As you noted, CAPTCHA is only one solution for human verification, and we’re always considering ways of staying ahead of the curve on spam signups. Forgive me for being scant on details, as we don’t want to advertise exactly what we’re doing in hopes of mitigating most effectively.

    One of my clients was barraged with >157,000 fake signups in the course of a few hours. Fortunately, NationBuilder engineers were relatively quick to respond and block these (Thanks, NB!). However, with the option to have Captcha, or some other human-verification process (such as a “honeypot”), we could prevent this from happening in the future.

    As with others below — this is an increasing and constant problem. I get multiple spam signups on our Volunteer page every day. Manually clicking every single one as “Spam” is a big timesink that achieves nothing — the bots are back the next day regardless. (But of course I can’t just ignore them, since NationBuilder charges based on the number of contacts in your Nation, and every one of those worthless sign-ups is a new contact…)

    After DELETING my Moderated Events Page, I’m still getting hit with Ghost Accounts, who then post the same spam on their Public Profile.

    So add to my comments below:
    Public Profiles are only Available to Users who are 1. Logged In, and 2 Validated their email address to create Events, Comments or Public Profiles.
