working with filter list

When I'm working with a filtered list, can I remove a contact from that filter list with the delete X to the right of the contact to remove them from the filter without deleting the contact info?  I'm updating and want to remove them from the list as I've completed my update on them and would like to make my list shorter as I go through it.
