More information on backups

I am just starting with NationBuilder. I would like a bit more clarification on the real-time backups that NB does in order to plan for disaster recovery or roll-back of information. I previously worked in a major IT enterprise environment. I now maintain a number of WordPress websites where there are plugins that will allow you to schedule your own snapshot backups, where there are features like website page versioning, and where you have access to your own MySQL database.

Could you clarify on the following?

1. When you refer to real-time backup, are you referring to file replication to a backup destination as soon as there is a change in the database or to website files? What is the implication for roll-back? Is the real-time backup meant only for disaster recovery to the last known version?

2. Can you recover individual components (eg pages, database records), or only the whole system?

3. Does NB provide a method for website page versions to provide rollback in case of mistakes while working on pages?

4. What is the response time if we submit a request for a restore from the real-time backup?

5. I understand from reading some of your FAQs that we cannot recover any data from our snapshots and that we need to ask NB to do it for us. What individual components can be restored from the snapshot? How long will it take for NB to do a restore if we ask for it?

6. I really want to avoid manual intervention as I maintain a number of websites as a volunteer. Having to manually trigger snapshots is a real pain and relying on this is dangerous as it's often not done. Is there any way to schedule snapshots so we don't have to rely on manual intervention? If not, are you working on this?

Official response from

Sure!

1. Yes, the real time back up is just a live back up of your nation as it is. So if anything happens to the entire system your data and site are safe. This also means that if you make any big changes they will save immedietly and you will not be able to go back.

2. You can only recover the whole system from the moment the snapshot finished.

3. No, there is no method for rollback but there is a preview button to make sure that your page is what you expect before you publish.

4. You cannot request a restore from a realtime back up - it will be where your nation is currently.

5. You will need to email [email protected] to discuss your site back up.

6. There isn't a way to schedule snapshots at the moment but you are welcome to make the suggestion at nationbuilder.com/suggest
