Is there a way to programmatically progress a user along a path when they complete an arbitrary action on the site, such a complete a quiz or click a button? I see documentation on how to start them on a path automatically in certain circumstances, but could not find documentation on creating any arbitrary triggers to start them on a path or move them along a path. Does the ability exist to change users' path positions programmatically or does it all have to be done by hand?

People can be moved along a path either manually from the control panel or by taking an action on your site. For instance, you can have a path for "engaged users." When they signup for your list you can place them on the path. When they donate it can move them to a new step and when they complete a survey it'll put them on a new step, and so on.
Currently, outside of that, path automation isn't a feature. If you'd like to see it as a part of NationBuilder, I'd recommend making it a feature request.
