Primary victory means a great time on election night - but the celebration shifts immediately to planning for what's next. Last June, we saw candidates like Richard Bloom and Eric Swalwell place second in primaries, build nations, then beat establishment opponents. Bloom defeated Assemblywoman Betsy Butler and Swalwell turned a 36 percent primary finish to a 53 percent victory in the runoff.

In Los Angeles and other cities holding low turnout spring primary and runoff elections, your digital field strategy is even more important. Using NationBuilder's tools it's possible to identify and reach a significant portion of your runoff turnout voter universe.

Here's how you do it:

  • Run Facebook ads targeting your district. The ads should highlight a post - anyone who likes it will have their public Facebook information added to your nation.
  • Get the statement of the vote and import all voters who participated in the primary.
  • In California, voter email addresses are available from the voter file. NationBuilder Match automatically merges those emails with social media profiles from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Klout.
  • Using your email list, Facebook, and Twitter supporters already in your nation, with NationBuilder's dedupe tool, merge those IDs into your nation's voter file.
  • NationBuilder's political capital shows who your most engaged supporters are. Create targeted social media campaigns through your biggest supporters from the primary. Here's a short video on this tactic:
